Mass., that passed the House just
before the summer recess, despite the
best efforts of Republican leaders.
The measure would ban soft-
money contributions to political par-
ties and limit issue advocacy commer-
cials by outside groups in the two
months before an election.
Pelavin acknowledged that the mea-
sure is a long shot in the Senate,
where leading Republicans have
promised a filibuster. The two leading
Senate advocates of campaign finance
reform — Sen. Russ Feingold, D-
Wis., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.,
— have not yet revealed how they will
respond to the House measure.
The RAC, Pelavin said, will con-
centrate on a handful of Republican
senators who they hope to convert to
the cause — including Sen. Alfonse
D'Amato, R-N.Y.
"We really do view this as a moral
issue," he said. "How can we expect
just results from an unjust political
system? People are starring to respond
to that argument more than ever."

Ashcroft Wows The Jews

Sen. John Ashcroft, R-Mo., who is
engaged in an unannounced but very
energetic race for the Republican pres-
idential nomination in 2000, is quick-
ly emerging as the favorite of many
Christian right leaders.
And now, Washington sources say,
he's getting ready for some serious
outreach to Jewish voters, with a spe-
cial emphasis
on an
Orthodox
community
that has
applauded his
efforts on
"charitable
choice" legis-
lation.
