scoreless overtime, L.A. won 4-3 in a
penalty-kick shootout.
Detroit's lone gold medal in a team
sport came in a controversial in-line
hockey final against the Mid-Island.
Montreal kept L.A. out of the hockey
medals, winning the bronze.
In 15-16 boys' basketball,
Philadelphia came back from a 14-
point first-half deficit to beat Suffolk,
N.Y., 70-67 in overtime. Suffolk
emerged as the 20th seeded team out
of 21 after the first round of play.
Philadelphia's victory avenged a loss to
Suffolk in the gold medal game at the
Seattle regional last year.
In girls' volleyball, Chicago took
the gold medal from Los Angeles in
the final, with Baltimore finishing
third. In boys' beach volleyball,
Toronto 1 won the gold over Chicago,
with one of next year's regional hosts
Rochester, N.Y., taking the bronze.
One of the games' stars was 14-
year-old swimmer. Yuriy Bugayev from
