Have I Got A Job For You

economy
booming,
job recruiters
are riding the
crest of a truly
excellent wave.

D

on Huldin's job as a sales
representative for a
Southgate firm repairing fac-
tory robots and industrial
equipment had gotten tiresome after five
years. He wanted a more challenging sit-
uation and, with a forthcoming mar-
riage, better financial security.
Through a friend's referral, he turned
to Harvey Gersin, a professional
recruiter with Sales Consultants of
Farmington, a franchise of Management
Recruiters International, Inc.(MRI).
Don Gesick, a manufacturing engi-
neer, wasn't disgruntled at Detroit
Diesel. He just wanted more growth
opportunity in the highly technical
engine manufacturing field. He checked
out the job possibilities on the Internet
and also used it as a source to contact
Brian Binke of the MRI branch in
Birmingham.
While Dave Zanon worked as a data
base administrator for Fidelity
Investments in Boston, he dreamed of

returning to his.Midwest roots and an
auto industry job in the Detroit area.
On the Internet, he located Sam
Skeegan of Roth-Young Personnel, with
20 branches nationwide, including
Southfield and Farmingtqp Hills.
Huldin, Gesick and Zanon are just
three of many young people taking
advantage of today's prime job market to
secure better positions and compensa-
tion, and more opportunity to grow and
advance in business and industry.
And Gersin, Binke and Skeegan —
all Jewish — are just three of many pro-
fessional job recruiters — "headhunters"
— who are riding the crest of the job
placement market.
It's a market where some job seekers
are commanding big signing bonuses,
like the sports stars, or stock options,
free cars and other perks. One large
Detroit area bank has given $1 million
in signing bonuses to managerial
employees in recent years. One woman
manager in another industry changed
jobs because the new company provided
a room where her baby could be nursed.
Gersin interviewed Huldin three

times and did an extensive character
study. He realized the Albion College
graduate could think fast on his feet,
learn quickly and sell. Drawing on his
experience in sales, marketing and engi-
neering, Gersin helped negotiate
Huldin's salary with Weltronic
Technitron in Novi, where Huldin is
now regional sales manager selling weld-
ing tools to auto manufacturers and sup-
pliers in five states.
"Using a professional job recruiter is
the only way to go," said Huldin. "If I
ever looked for another job, I would
return to him. I laugh now when I read
job ads placed by companies on their
own. A $10 ad will get you a $10
employee."
Gesick wasn't really dissatisfied with
his three-year job at Detroit Diesel, but
he was curious to see if there were better
opportunities in his field. "The Internet
is great because you can rake a peek at
what's going on without anyone know-
ing who you are," he said. "Brian
(Binke) took over and made a match
within six weeks at Borg Warner
Automotive in Warren."
Binke huddled with Gesick to corn-
pare key job points and pros and cons
between Detroit Diesel and Borg
Warner. He then explained Gesick's
attributes to the Borg Warner human
resources people, who learned for them-
selves during interviews.
Zanon checked the Internet in April,
found Roth-Young in the Yellow Pages
for assistance, interviewed at JATO
Dynamics in Troy in early May, and
accepted the job May 25. He performs
auto industry research for the Big Three
and suppliers.
"Sam (Skeegan) was very quick to
respond and gave me a lot of personal
attention in helping me adapt to a new
area and a new career," said Zanon. "I
was so confident in him that I quit the
Boston job, moved back here and got a
part-time job in a book store while he
helped negotiate my salary and 'sell'
JATO on me. I got more money, and
the living costs are lower."
Gersin owns Sales Consultants, a
rapidly growing search and recruiting
firm that, in the past five years, has
matched hundreds of people to the right
career opportunities. Sales revenue has
