$2.2 Million
Former Detroiter wins harassment suit.
TOM TUGEND
Special to The Jewish News
A
jury in Los Angeles earlier
this month awarded $2.2 mil-
lion to a Howell man who
sued his company after
enduring anti-Semitic slurs for nearly 10
years.
Jeffrey Graber, 41, who moved back
to Michigan three years ago, testified
that he was frequently harassed during
his tenure at Litton Guidance and
Control Systems.
As a result, he developed digestive
problems and eventually was put on per-
manent disability leave because of severe
depression, the Los Angeles Times report-
ed. Graber, an Oak Park native who
graduated from Berkley High School,
worked as a senior equipment manager
in the printing and binding center of
Litton from 1985 to 1994.
In a typical incident, Graber said, his
assistant supervisor called him a "cheap
Jew" for not contributing to a Christmas
gift. Another time, when Graber told
co-workers about a good deal he had
gotten on a watch, Wood observed that
he "must have Jewed [the seller] down."
Graber said he made numerous com-
plaints to the company's human
resources department, but "they didn't
want to acknowledge it because it was a
can of worms and they didn't want to
open that can. Their whole thing was to
smooth things over."
Graber, who now works as a new car
salesman in Howell, said his former
supervisors began to harass him almost
as soon as they learned he was Jewish.
They also made constant racist remarks
about Polish, Mexican and African-
American employees, he said.
After a two-week trial and another
full week of deliberations, the Los
Angeles jury found that each of the
three supervisors named in Graber's law-
suit was liable for $10,000 in damages.
It also assessed Litton more than
$555,000 for loss of wages and emo-
tional distress, and more than $1.6 mil-
lion in punitive damages.
Graber said his attorney told him
Litton would most certainly appeal
within the next 60 days.
Litton would not comment on the .
case, but in court testimony, the three
supervisors named in Graber's lawsuit
said they did not know Graber was
Jewish.
"I'm glad this is behind me now
because it's been very, very difficult for
me," Graber said, adding that he did
not sue for the money "Even though
I've been removed from the situation for
a few years, the things that were said to
me will always stay with me."
