MONDAY VIOLENCE from page 116 cal contact," says McVey, a former spe- cial agent in the FBI. "If an employee is even threatened, that's an act of vio- lence that needs to be addressed before it turns into something much more serious, like homicide." In addition to recognizing signs of violence, the authors recommend doing background checks, personali- ty tests and drug screening on potential employees. That works - to a point, according to the current issue of the American Council on Exercise's ResearchMatters newsletter. Researchers at the University of Nebraska in Kearney wanted to find out if these miniworkouts would bring about improved metabolic fit- ness and aerobic capacity, so they put 13 sedentary people on a 32- week program of three 10-minute bouts of exercise a day, five days a week. The study participants stuck to the program, but after 32 weeks, they had not increased the number of calories burned per session or improved their aerobic capacity. The moral of this study? The body needs increasing challenges in order to improve overall fitness. Miniworkouts may help novice exer- cisers get on the road to better health, but they'll need to work harder as their body adapts to work- ing out.
