He was surprised to find that fruit juice could contain so much fluoride. "Although fluoride can also be found in drinking water and tooth- paste, the fact that there's so much fluoride in some of these juices is startling," Chase says. White grape juice has the highest concentration of fluoride, largely because of use of an insecticide that contains the stuff. Orange juice, lemonade, fruit nectars and pineap- ple juice have the lowest fluoride concentrations. Since labels on commercial fruit juice don't include information about fluoride concentration, Chase recom- mends that children between 5 and 7 - the years when tooth enamel is formed - drink less than I quart of juice per day. Workplace Violence r ew managers are equipped to deal with workplace vio- lence, say two professors at Purdue University. But lay- offs, downsizing, long hours and mergers add stress that makes vio- lence at work more common than ever. A 1993 Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. report reveals that in 1992 2.2 million American work- ers were physically attacked, 6.3 mil- lion were threatened and 16.1 mil- lion were harassed. In their new book, 'Managing Violence in the Workplace" (St. Lucie Press), Thomas K. Capozzoli and Robert S. McVey say that manage- ment policies often exacerbate vio- lence instead of prevent it. Case studies show that ignoring a disgrun- tled employee's complaints can lead to a tragic outcome. "It's obvious from the cases we studied that managers and supervi- sors simply are not being trained to deal with potentially volatile situa- tions in the workplace," says Capoz- zoli, who spent 30 years with Gener- al Motors as a consultant and is a research associate for the National Center for the Management of Workplace Violence. "Too often, employers don't consider something violent unless there is physi- VIOLENCE on page 118
