Allow the child to select paint and wallpaper for the new room, and, if feasible, give him or her a paint brush to help with the dec- orating. • For a child losing a special friend because of a move, encour- age the pair to exchange scrap- books. Help them collect special pictures, mementos and other items and assemble them into a memory box. Writing letters and phone calls are good methods to keep in touch after the move. • Ha child experiences the death of a parent, let him or her choose a special memento or photo to save. • If the child experiences the loss of a pet or special toy, don't jump to replace the lost item too quickly. Mourning is a natural experience and replacing a lost item can mar this process. • In a divorce, help the child set up a special communication system. A daily e-mail message can be a fun learning experience, or a roll of stamps and a stack of pre-addressed envelops for send- ing pictures and letters across town gives children an easy-to- use tool for sharing. Children, especially young ones, like to receive mail, too. • For children who are mov- ing, plan a special party or event to honor the child leaving the neighborhood. The same can work well for welcoming new children in the neighborhood. • If you're moving into a new neighborhood, check our avail- able activities. If your child takes ballet or plays soccer, find a place for lessons before the move and tell your child about it. Some type of consistency works won- - ders for children adjusting to change. • Give your child an inexpen- sive or disposable camera and let him or her take pictures of the old neighborhood or of a friend who is moving away. a Sample our Shabbat service on August 29, September 5 or September 12, 1998.
