OPEN 7 DAYS 8 p.m.-9 p.m.
6393 Farmington Road, Just N. of Maple
(Next to the Sports Club) • West Bloomfield
(248) 626-3722

passed hors d'oeuvres and visited the
butterfly region, seeing a colorful array
of winged beauties along with some
fast-flying hummingbirds.
Champagne and cocktails ... Din-
ner and desserts by Executive Chef
Michael Berend and his staff ... He is
chef for the Detroit Red Wings ... The
Detroit Zoo commissary is operated
by Mike Ilitch, who bought out Fred
and Dennis Silber's contract.
Michael, previously at Golden
Mushroom under Chef Milos Cihelka,
and Les Auteurs with Chef Keith
Famie, was appreciated especially by
Mort Zieve, whose allergy to garlic
causes throat closing and breathing
difficulty ... He was given his own spe-
cially prepared dish.
Ad men Fred Yaffe and Fred Marx
talking about the World ... Bill Wolf
of Newton Furniture saying what a
great place it was for affairs ... And
Chuck Hammond, former Zoo head,
now executive director of the Barbara
Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute,
agreeing ... Cardiologist Jerry Timmes
back in the groove again after neck
surgery ... while sweet wife, Dorothy,
is on the mend from a nasty fall.
MAIL DEPT. ... From former
Detroiter Harvey Barnett ... "For the
past 21 years I have lived in Florida,
and still keep in touch with my one-
time band partner, Kenny Singer. We
continue conversations as though we
just saw each other yesterday. The
same with Clive Cantor, with whom I
grew up.
"Through the years, other former
band members, like Iry Witcoff, Mike
Handelsman, Paul Moceri and Ellis
Bonner, who passed on recently, have
been seen and/or talked to.
"An old friend, Joe Oddo, and wife,
Gwen, who moved to Edgewater, Fla.,
in May 1998, stay in touch. Verna and
I have attended all their children's
weddings.
"In a recent Mail Dept. item, you
had an article from Ruth Sloan about
Chicago hotels. My mom and dad
(Ethel and Joe Barnett) used to attend
Mel Torme's shows at the Ambassador
East's Pump Room, when he was 17
and skinny as Sinatra in 1940.
"During spring 1998, my cousin,
Bob Sklar, took over as editor of your
very fine paper. Bob, wife Beth, and
my mom (the only one left of the sec-
ond generation of Jacob and Sophie
Sklar's wonderful family) and yours
truly had a fun time together at my
grandson Brandon Barnett's bar mitz-
vah. My cousins, Nate and Betty Bar-
nett, celebrated with us also." CI
