rom the kitchen, the owner
yells a greeting to Burton
- Leland as he takes a seat and
orders a cup of coffee at the
Dog House Coney Island on Warren
Avenue and Westwood.
This is Leland territory, an area
bounded by Telegraph and Greenfield
in north and west Detroit where the
state Senate candidate has represented
voters for 18 years.
Having bumped up against term
limits as state representative of the
largely black 13th District, Leland ran
in the larger 5th Senate District against
25-year incumbent Sen. Michael
O'Brien in August's primary election,
beating him by an almost two-to-one
margin. He also trounced Marvin
Hicks, a black candidate.
"There's a history in Detroit of
blacks voting for whites, and running a
racial-based campaign doesn't go any-
where," he said. "I won by knocking
on every door in my district."
In November, the Democrat — the
only Jewish legislator representing
Detroit and one of the few Jews in the
state Legislature — will take on
Republican challenger Beverly Ann
Beal, but he won't talk about her.
"Move on," he said confidently.
"You can give me the title of 'senator-

elect.' There hasn't been a Republican
elected in Detroit probably in 30 to 35
years."
The 5th District is bordered by
Eight Mile on the north and Warren
Avenue on the south, between
Telegraph and Greenfield.
Leland, 49, fidgets when he talks,
and sometimes makes his point by
pointing with silverware, in this case a
teaspoon.
Married for 26 years to Rosanne and
the father of two teenaged sons, the
lanky lawmaker lives in a small, yellow
brick house on Tireman Avenue and
drives a 1993 Dodge Intrepid. His van-
ity license plate reads "REP013," but
that will change to "SEN005" in
November, he said.
His sons, raised with a "good Jewish
education," are involved with Habonim
Camp Tavor and the National
Federation of Temple Youth.
Leland, a Detroit Mumford High
graduate (Class of '66), describes him-
self as a child of the '60s who cares lit-
tle for material things.
A Wayne State University graduate,
he worked at the Wayne County
Department of Social Services between
1972 and 1980, earning a master's
degree from the University of Michigan
in social work at the same time.
"I get a lot of satisfaction out of just
doing right by people, by helping them
with their misery" he said. Leland said
