Angel Tales

King Solomon hears birds talking
about what they overheard while
eavesdropping on angels. He
learns that his daughter wants to
marry a poor man and locks her
away in a tower. With the help of
the angels Gabriel and Michael,
the king's plans are thwarted.
That story, a prototype for the
classic "Rapunzel" fairy tale, is a
favorite of Corinne Stavish, who
will conduct "Storytelling: Words
on Wings," a program filled with
Jewish folk legends about angels,
held in conjunction with the Vati-
can exhibit at the DIA.
"Angels are thought of as the
fingers of God, carrying out God's
messages and deeds," said Stavish,
whose program will come from
stories in the Talmud and.Cha-
sidic literature. She will relate
them to the Vatican artwork. Li

• URIEL — The angel of light, Uriel
plays a pivotal role in the Fourth Book
of Ezra in the Pseudepigrapha. When
Ezra witnesses the destruction of
Jerusalem at the hands of the Romans
in 66 C.E., he asks how such cruelty
can come into the world with a benev-
olent God? Uriel answered much in
the way God answered Job.
"Your understanding has utterly
failed regarding this world, and do you
think you can comprehend the way of
the Most High? ... I have been sent to
show you three problems. If you can
solve one of them for me, I also will
show you the way you desire to see,
and will teach you why the heart is evil
... Go, weigh for me the weight of fire,
or measure for me a blast of wind, or
call back. for me the day that is past ...
Uriel attempts to give hope not
understanding. The question why can-
not be understood by human reason
or logic.
