Night On The Town

T

he night mists coolly,
slightly cloudy and calm.
The sun drops into the
horizon, as downtown
Pontiac gives the first signs of awak-
ening.
Like a child announcing to his
mother that he is up and the day can
now begin, the neon snaps on at first
Velvet Lounge, then Diamonds and
Spurs, then J.D.'s Key Club, and on
down Saginaw Street. The sound of
calloused fingers
o o grazing
0 o guitar
strings floats from the Beale Street
Blues bar, and a few blocks away,
famous pop acts find long lines of
mellow fans outside the old church
that has become the monster night
club, Clutch Cargo.
In Pontiac, you. will find the mix
of art and culture many Detroiters
long for. An innocuous four-block
street in a surrounding neighbor-
hood that mixes shadiness with style,
downtown Pontiac has become the
bustling
o hub of hot night
o life in
metro Detroit. It is almost artistic in
its \rariery.

Pontiac's Soho aura and eclectic cultural mix
draw metro Detroit's most diverse crowd

It seems particularly innocuous in downtown Pontiac, where you'll find galleries
of fine art next to smoky coffee shops, and fraternity-attracting microbreweries
beside blues bars.

Left: Packed into tight tables,
blues lovers are drawn into
the Beak. Street Blues bin;
beyond its sax-y neon sign, by
the low drawl and throaty
authenticity of local blues
artists. Sometimes the bar
offers
rs open mike nights for
those Stevie Ray wannabes.

Suit coats flare, while trained feet tap the checkered
tile dance _floor of Velvet Lounge. Don't swing unless
you mean it.

Above: All work and no play
is never a good idea. Bryan
Albertson of Pontiac talks on
his cellular phone outside Bi's
Brewer), and Bistro. Ahhh,
the wonders of technology.
