suppose I might have stayed
disheartened like that had it not
been for the birth of my children.
One of the most wondrous fea-
tures of children is that they are
born sweet and pure — without
hatred, prejudice or sarcasm.
They are sincere in everything. A
4-year-old does not smile because
he hopes you might lend him
money; he smiles because he
loves you, and you have made
him happy. An 8-year-old does not
laugh at your jokes because she
hopes you might give her a raise;
she laughs because she thinks
your silly jokes are really funny.
I watch with pleasui'e when my
son tells me he thinks Halle Berry
(and not some long-haired blonde,
white actress) is the most beautiful
woman in the world; and my
1 eldest daughter wonders, in all
sincerity, "Why would somebody
API not like somebody else just
because he's Jewish?" and my
, infant daughter smiles at every-
: one, because she believes no one
: means her anything but good will
I because all she knows of the
I world is love.
I hope my children do not grow
I
up to be sarcastic, though I know
that all too soon they will come to
I see that life is not what they imag-
ine.
And I will have to sit back —
comforting, but unable to erase
the truth — as their dreams of a
wonderful world are clear, then
dissipate, like a cloud, then per-
haps are gone altogether.
But for now, I am grateful —
grateful for their innocence and
trust and sincerity. Because with
these, my children have given me
a gift I myself once had, then lost
somewhere along the way: the
ability to hope. n
