hurdle, too. While most preteens
would never admit it, it's a little scary.
A visit to .campus before school
wouldn't hurt, as well as preparing
your child to go from being in one
class with the same teacher to attend-
ing up to six different classes every
day.
Don't be surprised if your middle-
schooler needs a little help staying on
top of all that work.
Middle school is when students
really need time-management and
organizational skills. "Getting folders
color-coded : for the different subjects
may help," says Shaw. "Get your
child a large calendar that's erasable
so that projects and test schedules can
be written down."
Middle school also is when stu-
dents start tackling assignments that
take time to complete, so kids need
to learn how to plan and execute
long-term projects. That's a far cry
from completing homework assign-
ments in an evening.
And before school starts, she'rec-
ommends a "cool-down time in the
afternoon that will imitate homework
time. The kids may not be thrilled
about this, but it will help in the
transition."
Mock recommends establishing
homework routines right away, before
kids are loaded down with term
papers and midterm exams. Some
kids work best if they come home,
have a snack and start their home-
work. But Mock thinks parents
shouldn't be too dogmatic about how
kids do their homework. Instead,
work with your child to find his best
work setting.
Some kids work more efficiently
with music playing in the back-
ground, while others prefer toiling
alone in silence. Other kids are con-
tent to work at the kitchen table
while Mom and Dad make dinner.
However kids work best, parents
shouldn't hover, but they should be
available to answer questions and
offer support when it's needed. "The
goal for homework is for the child to
assume responsibility," says Mock. ❑
