Some parents spend so much time
managing their own schedules that
they forget about their child's need
for structure and stimulation.
Other parents subconsciously
impose their busy lifestyle on their
kids, penciling them in for one after-
school activity after another and leav-
ing them little time to be, well, kids.
Parenting expert Dr. T Berry
Brazelton suggests striking a balance
between the stultifying world of after-
noon television and the go-go rush of
resume-building activity mania.
"Parents should know that they
can overload a child just as easily as
they can bore them," Brazelton said.
"You have to hit in the middle some-
where. You have to plan each child's
schedule according to the child's
needs. But that means you've got to
know the child and you've got to
know what they can take."
And that means taking some time
out from your busy schedule to map
out your child's before-school, after-
school and weekend activities.

hey call it the Information
Superhighway, but if you
spend any time on the
Internet you know that the
vast majority of Web sites are more
like billboards scattered along the
interstate. Companies use the Web to
push their products, while bored
cybergeeks set up pages loaded with
personal ramblings that have all of
the intellectual content of graffiti.
All is not lost, however. The educa-
tion industry is continually finding
new ways to turn Web technology
into a worthwhile scholastic tool.
There are scores of sites designed
exclusively for students and their par-
ents - pages created to help kids find
solutions to homework problems and
pages to help parents keep up with
their children's educational develop-
ment.
You wouldn't dream of dropping
your kids off on the front steps of
your local library without some guid-
ance, and by the same token you
should never log your kids onto the
Internet without nudging them in the
