eachers have told
Scholastic that when it
comes to using the
Internet with their stu-
dents, safety is their No. 1 concern,"
said Robert Gehorsam, vice president
of Scholastic New Media. These con-
cerns are well founded, and no doubt
shared by parents everywhere.
As with anything related to the
Internet, the private sector is always
_ready to meet a need, and there are a
'variety of "baby-sitting" programs
designed to prevent your kids from
surfing to sexually explicit sites.
Consumer Reports recently tested
the top censorship programs by
attempting to surf to 22 easily acces-
sible sites filled with objectionable
content. Here's what they found:
• SurfWatch 1.6v2 ($49.95, Win-
dows and Mac) blocked 18 of 22 sites.
• Cyber Patrol 3.1 (free to AOL,
CompuServe and Prodigy subscribers;
Windows and Mac) blocked 16 of 22
sites.
• CyberSitter 2.1 ($39.95, Win-
dows only) blocked 14 of 22 sites.
• Net Nanny 3.1 ($39.95, Win-
dows) blocked none of the sites.
Clearly, none of these applications
s perfect. And it's hard to imagine a
baby-sitting program that will ever
outwit a determined child.
Once again, parents should be
aware that no piece of software is
going to replace their jobs as supervi-
sors for their Web-surfing kids.

Although we often think of adoles-
cence as a difficult time, teen-agers
may see things differently.
About 57 percent of the adoles-
cents who participated in a recent
React magazine survey said they
=''ould like to be teen-agers forever.
The majority of respondents, 54
percent, said 18 to 24 is the ideal age
group; 38 percent said they would
choose to be 15 or younger; 6 percent
voted for 25-35; and only 6 percent
said that 36 or older would be best.
