community members affiliated with
Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit or the Conservative movement.
No Reform Jews sit on the board yet,
although the school's marketing consul-
tant, Cindy Eggleton, said greater
diversity will be sought when a more
long-term board is created.
Many other details about the
school — such as religiou's policy,
recruitment of faculty and lay leader-
ship — will not be made final until a
headmaster has been hired, said
Eggleton. She said that approximately
40 candidates have been interviewed
so far.
The academy's headmaster search
has been going on over six months,
stymied in part by a national shortage
of administrators for Jewish education
jobs. To aid in its search; the academy
has hired a New York-based executive
search firm and is also receiving
administrative support from the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
"There have been some good candi-
dates, but we're proceeding cautiously
to make sure we get the right leader,"
said Rachel Yoskowitz, secretary to the
board.
The Jewish Academy began adver-
tising in The Jewish News last week. It
plans to launch a series of focus
groups and telephone interviews with
potential students and parents in the
coming months. The goal of the focus
groups will be to determine what fam-
ilies are seeking and how community
needs can best be addressed, said
Eggleton.
Boston's Lehmann, who has con-
sulted with leaders from the Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit,
said that given Hillel's success and the
size and wealth of the Detroit Jewish
community, the new school's chances
for success are "certain."
Lehmann's suggestions for the plan-
ners of the Jewish Academy? "Think
big and try to bring as many resources
as you can to the school," he said.
"You've got U-M, Wayne State and
other cultural institutions — use
them. Pay significant salaries to attract
top-notch Judaic studies people and
set your sights on creating one of the
best high schools in the Detroit area."
He said school leaders should sup-
port innovative education practices.
"Jewish schools are interesting.
because they're Jewish, but that
shouldn't be sufficient," he said.
"Create a school that educators in the
non-Jewish community would also
like to see and learn from)' El
