In January he won the Middlesex under-14 singles title, and represent- ed Middlesex in Junior County matches this season. In the last year, he went from being ranked 90th to 18th while winning two junior (under-17) tournaments. Elina Groberman, Chess Delegation: Jewish Commiinity House of Bensonhurst Background: In her two major events this year, Elina took sixth place at the New York City High School Championships, and contributed to her school, Brooklyn's Edward R. Murrow High School, winning first place. This past May in Florianapolis, Brazil, she was co- champion at the Pan-American Girls Under-18 Championship. In 1997, Elina, 14, took first place at the Liberty Bell Open, and tied for first at the World Open. At the New York State Women's Championship she was co-champion. Sophie Kohene, Track and Field Delegation: Great Britain Background: Sophie, like her teammate Jo Ankier, was a star in both the Maccabi Games at Metro West in 1996 and Maccabiah in Israel last year. In New Jersey, she captured nine gold medals: 400 meter dash, 800, 1,600, 3,200 and cross country events, as well as four relays. In Israel,.she took gold in the 400 and 800 and silver in the 1,500 and 4x100 relay. In the past cross country season in England, Sophie was the Middlesex under-17 county champi- on, and finished eighth in both the English schools and English national competitions. In the current track season, she was the Middlesex under-17 800 meter champ. Last month, she came in fourth in the under-17 1,500 event at the English Schools Athletics Championships. Eduardo Marcuschamer, Track and Field Delegation: Mexico Background: At last year's Maccabiah in 0 Israel, Eduardo was a workhorse on the Mexican team. Participating in five events, he placed 10th in the 400 and 100 meters, fourth with the 4x200 relay and in the long jump, and took the bronze medal in the 100 hurdles. At Mexico's D.F. Championships, he took second in the long jump, triple jump and 4x100 relay, and fourth in the heptathalon. Louis Rosenthal, Table Tennis Delegation: Great Britain Background: Louis, 13, is participating in his first Maccabi i s Games, but has made his mark with the England schools national team. The Manchester native won a team gold medal at the international schools tournament, which featured under-14s from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Iceland and the Isle of Man. At the tournament, he cap- tured a pair of bronze medals in the singles and doubles competitions. At the end-of-season Manchester Maccabi award banquet, he was named the "Junior Sports Personality of the Year." Ryan Schloss, Basketball Delegation: Philadelphia Background: Ryan, 16, will be the starting point guard on the Philly basketball team for the fourth consecutive year at the Maccabi Games, in addition to his participation in Israel at the Maccabiah last year. Playing in Maccabi has brought Ryan, and the Philadelphia squad, a great deal of success.
