were trying to get her out," he
recalled, "I asked her about other
people who might still be in the
building. A year later, she spotted me
at an army exhibition. She remem-
bered every question, word for word.
I hadn't even recognized her."
As a sad footnote to the Kenya
affair, Hamodia, the daily newspaper
of the Orthodox Agudat Yisrael,
accused the Israeli army rescue team of
"desecrating the Sabbath to an
unprecedented extent" by flying to
Nairobi last Saturday and getting
straight to work. It cited a rabbinical
ruling that the Shabbat should- not be
desecrated to save "a goy buried under
a pile of stones."
The next day, after the report had
been reproduced in the secular press,
Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir
Lau issued a counter-ruling. It was, he
insisted, permissible to break the
Shabbat in order to save any life,
Jewish or gentile.
