THE DEAL MAKER S

Jewish Education. He helped create a
package of program ideas for teen
educators and youth group leaders,
helped organize a resource guide for
single Jewish parents and had a hand
in planning the AJE's annual Taste of
Honey event.
The experience taught Feldman a
lot about Jewish non-profits, includ-
ing some things he didn't want to
know. "The best thing was learning
about all the different resources the
community provides, but I also
learned about competition among
Jewish agencies, and that was disap-
pointing to see because we should all
be working together," he said. "Often
people wouldn't share pictures or
materials because they were using
them for their own events.
"I also heard a lot of stories about
different agencies wanting to look bet-
ter than the others in the eyes of
Federation and the community."
Just down the hall from Feldman,
Western Michigan University student
Heather Tower spent the summer at
the Hebrew Free Loan, where she
helped out with various administrative
duties. She described the Friday semi-
nars as "amazing," noting that she
learned a lot about the relationship
between Federation and the agencies
to which it allocates funds.
Tower, who is planning a career in
business, said the internship experience
helped her decide she would rather be
a lay leader than a Jewish communal
professional. "Volunteers have more
say where the money goes and what
programs are started," she said.
Jordana Weiss, a planning associate
at Federation and Geoffrey Dworkin's
supervisor there, raved about both
JOIN and Dworkin.
"It really introduces younger people
to possible career and volunteer
opportunities that they would have
never been aware of," she said. "Geoff
was a tremendous help on a number
of assignments and I think he really
learned a lot."
The 15 interns, who must be resi-
dents of the Detroit area, are chosen
from a pool of approximately 40
applicants and are selected on the
basis of previous work and volunteer
experience, along with their interview-
ing success. Applicants meet with
Silver, along with supervisors from
several agencies.
JOIN is funded by JVS and the
Jeannette and Oscar Cook endowment
fund. Jewish agencies participating in
the program, such as MJAC and JARC,
directly fund their JOIN interns.
