July 23. He is survived by his wife,

MARTIN MESSER, 83, of Oak Park,

died Aug. 5. He was a non-commis-
sioned officer in the U.S. Army during
World War II. He owned a wholesale
shoe business, J. Messer Shoes, with his
father for 25 years; subsequently he
worked in furniture sales and interior
design. He was treasurer for the Gray
Panthers, nursing home ombudsman for
Citizens for Better Care, a member of
the Oak Park Cultural Arts Committee
and a public school aide for children
with special needs. In addition, Mr.
Messer was a member of the choir for
the Sholem Aleicherri. Institute, a book
club participant and a five-mile walker.
He is survived by his wife, Trudi
Messer of Oak Park; daughters and
sons-in-law, Elaine and Jeff Hyman of
Cherry Hill, NJ., Susan (Jim Poznak)
Messer of Oak Park, Ill., Jan (Barry
Rothman) Messer of San Francisco,
Judy and Jack Nolish of Huntington
Woods; son and daughter-in-law,
Harold and Cathy Haftka of Rochester
Hills; sister, Violet Langer of Southfield;
grandchildren, Selena Poznak, Rachel
Nolish, Jeffrey Nolish, Alexis Haftka and
Chelsea Haftka; niece Debbie (Don)
Berlin. Martin was the beloved husband
of the late Sylvia Messer.
