EN Advantage CD 11-MONTH ADVANTAGE CD Lori and Cary Greenberg show off a "media room" they designed. /— than-good marriage work together? "Oh, sure, we have our moments," they laugh in unison. "Absolutely," Cary says in his home-based office, as his Lawrence Tech intern, Cynthia Wang, smirks over her drafting table. "Daily, we have discussions," Cary -says, "but we get it out of the way before Cynthia shows up." Lori, who has designed dozens of residences, including the award-win- ning home of former Pistons basket- ball player Terry Mills, says, "We bounce ideas off of each other. We may have different theories, different thoughts and approaches and we may argue about something, but it's nice to can on each other." Adds Cary: "Lori is real cut and dry. You know, 'This is the way it is. But she brings me back to reality." As with a smooth-running mar- riage, Cary believes each partner in a business needs to know what his or her obligations are. "You have to have responsibilities. n a marriage, each knows what they have to do in the house. For example, Lori's a working mom so I make the bed in the morning," he says. "You have to help each other and know what you do best and do that. Know what your partner does well." The Greenbergs say they know when to call it a day — although a few weeks ago Cary excused himself om a dinner party in their home to go cover up some mortar at a con- struction site. "The skies were dark, it was going to pour any second, and I happened to know that the mortar wasn't protected," he says. "We're hands-on in many ways." But generally when the work day ends, "We close the door and then become husband and wife again, focusing on each other, our family and social lives," Lori says. She and Cary, whose own home is eclectic and classic ("I don't like trendy," she stresses) like to entertain and they also are avid runners, head- ing out for a five-mile jog together about four or five times per week. - The couple prevents tunnel vision by traveling. Just back from a trip to Los Angeles, they toured the new J. Paul Getty Museum, designed by Richard Meier & Partners. They spent hours outside the building, studying its shapes and its gorgeous landscap- ing. "I equate that museum with the ancient ruins. That's how strong of a statement the designer makes," Cary says. "The spaces are tremendous," adds Lori. Knowing your craft is undoubtedly a requirement in the Greenbergs' busi- ness. But to be a successful architect and designer, one must also be a psy- chologist-, Cary says, adding that when dealing with clients there are many needs to fulfill. "People are too smart today. They want an experience. Architects and designers have got to deal with experience and project a feeling." Great service also tops the G Group's how-to-be-successful list. "If you go to a doctor and you like the doctor, that's 90 percent of the cure," Cary says. "If you don't have the ser- vice, forget it, you're gone." Good service provides a nice bonus for the Greenbergs, too. "We often become a part of our clients' lives. We end up doing their kids' homes, too," Cary says. 17_ Earn higher interest with D&N's Advantage CD when you open and maintain a D&N checking account with a $100 minimum opening balance. 11-Month Certificate of Deposit requires a deposit of $5,000 or more.
