As talk of scandal pervades the airwaves, a CBS
Eye On People cable show provides perspective.
SUZANNE CHESSLER
Special to The Jewish News
A
s President Clinton prepares
. to answer grand jury ques-
tions about his relationship
with Monica Lewinsky, a
new CBS Cable series could provide
some particulars. "Scandal!" — 50 half-
hour programs exploring what happens
to disgraced public figures — premieres
10:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17,-and has
one segment devoted to "Bill's Girl-
friends."
Richard Schlesinger, a contributing
correspondent for the "CBS News
With Dan Rather," is the anchor for
the CBS on People cable show that is
broadcast locally to TCI digital sub-
scribers on Channel 273. It will air
10:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays for 10
weeks.
- "I hate to say it, but I think scandals
are becoming a form of entertainment,"
said Tom Seligson, "Scandal!" executive
producer who came up. with the idea
for the series.
"You can't turn on the television or
pick up a paper without seeing [some
form of scandal] as the primary news,
whether it's our president or a star ath-
lete [tried] for killing his wife and her
friend.
"While it's entertainment in the
sense that people are fascinated by
other people's lives, we're also trying to
inform about some of the scandals that
a lot of people may be unaware of."
Jewish celebrities who are the *focus of
specific shows include Sol Wachtler, a
New York judge who became a stalker,
and Mary Alpert, the sportscaster who
also got caught up in a sex controversy.
Other shows focus on Sen. Ted
Kennedy, who was embroiled in ques-
tionable circumstances surrounding the
death of an employee, and former auto
executive John DeLorean, who had to
face drug dealing charges.
On a wider scale, additional shows
cover California fertility doctors switch-
ing and misrepresenting embryos, CIA.
.operatives experimenting with 'LSD
through unsuspecting people and news-
paper reporters filing fictitious articles.
"Rather than just reportirig on Bill
Clinton's scandals, we look at why he
has gotten himself into so many
it
messes," Seligson said. "Even when
you'd think he'd be on his best behav-
ior, he goes out and risks even more
humiliation.
"One of the interviewees is a doctor
who explained the whole thing by
virtue of [the president] having come
from an alcoholic background and
never feeling that he was ever worthy.
No matter how much he accomplishes,*
he had to risk losing it all by doing
something chancy."
Newsman -Richard Schlesinger will
-anchor CBS Eye on People's "Scan-
dal!"
The series also includes a program
that comes closer to Michigan's Jewish
community as it explores insider trad-
ing scandals on Wall Street. The seg-
ment reviews the predicament of for-
mer Detroiter Ivan Boesky and tells
what he's doing today.
"There have been Jewish people
on both sides of these stories," said
Seligson, referring to the different
nature of problems faced individually mi
by Woody Allen and collectively by
Nazi hunters.
"I think most people are aware of
the scandal that Woody Allen found
himself in [with Mia Farrow's adopted
daughter], and I think it damaged his
public following.
