WHEN BROTHERS Ted and Ed
Mazer took over McInerney's Restau-
rant on Northwestern Highway, it was
a lonely stretch ...Then came restau-
rant row with Hugo's, Vineyards, Trio,
Great Dane, Victoria Station, Car-
men's Pizzeria, Library and others.
AFTER MANY YEARS, a bagel
spot was finally recognized by the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis because it
did nothing from sundown Friday to
sundown Saturday in accordance with
Jewish law ... Goldin Bagel on Middle-
belt in Farmington Hills was owned by
Leo Mertz and Phil Goldman.
RUBY D'S was a 1950s-style deli
at Sugar Tree on Orchard Lake Road
and a cafeteria during the day, with
customers taking numbers and names
being called out when orders were
ready ... At night, the spot owned by
Ruby Dennison had waitresses ... Its
refurbished '50s Wurlitzer played
songs of that era and most of its sand-
wiches and salads were named after
tunes of those times.
THE EXCELLENT mushroom
barley soup at the former Darbys was
only available on Sundays ... Many
still remember the delicious lima bean
and barley soup ... and wonderful hot
chicken poulette sandwich that Dar-
bys used to serve.
SINBAD'S on 10 1/2 and Lahser
was one of the few Middle Eastern
restaurants in the nation, if not any-
where, that served a different rice
every day with its meals ... What Sin-
bad's did with its rice was a rare treat.
NORTH CHINA restaurant on
Northwestern and 12 Mile, in the
Franklin Shopping Center, had some-
thing no other Oriental dining spot
could boast of ... Nelson Chen, co-
owner with Chef Hwang Jan, was a
Ph.D. nutritionist and an assistant
research scientist in nutrition ... work-
ing on dietary composition of choles-
terol and fat with regards to liver,
arteries and other organs of the body.
It was the former site of Gould's
Beef Buffet, Tunnel Bar-B-Q and
Hickory's ... and had perhaps the
largest Oriental menu in Michigan ...
132 items and 15 luncheon specials.
PEOPLE LOOKING for different
places to go liked Yannis on W. McNi-
chols, about a block west of Wood-
ward ... It was the former site of Petco
Bar-B-Q, and very unusual-looking ...
