He loathed most smells and noise,
and so insulated his apartment,
which he also had regularly fumi-
gated. He worked all day then
slept all night — in clothing, and in
gloves. Arriong his "business ven-
tures" was a brothel. Proust was 51

Fans of the author might be inter-

FYI: When England Called
On The Haganah

Israel's first army, the Haganah
("defense") was formed in 1920.
The British, who had a mandate
the area, ruled the organization
illegal so the Haganah was
forced to go
underground.
All meetings
were held in
secret and all
arms were
smuggled in. Yet

on the attack.
Finally, in 1936, the British
!
called on help from the Haganah
— and even sent a British captain
to help train the Jewish soldiers.
1 His name was Orde Wingate,
I and among his students were
Moshe Dayan, Yigal Allon and
Yitzhak Rabin. Wingate remains
I to this day a much-loved figure in
Israel, and he in turn established
close relationships with many of
the men he trained. He helped
fund an Israeli sports center that
bears his name. ❑
