ort Plotnick prepares to meet with
donors, he does his homework on
potential donors and creating relation-
ships with them.
Plotnick met Dan Kahn at the dedi-
cation of the Rosenberg Recreation
Complex nine years ago. "We struck up
a conversation and met a couple dozen
times over the years," Plotnick said.
In February, Kahn and his wife
etty, gave a $3.6 million for capital
improvements and an endowment for
the West Bloomfield JCC, now named
for them. Kahn said he donated to the
Center because he was able to use the
building to exercise and meet people
when he came to Detroit in 1941.
Plotnick said he stresses to potential
donors that both capital gifts and
endowments, which use the interest
on the principal
to pay for pro-
grams, endure.
"For agencies and
donors, gifts of
perpetuity are
important," he
said.
Hugh Green-
berg, the chair of
the Center's capi-
tal campaign,
doesn't subscribe to Mort Plotnick, the
JCC director of
the theory that the
development.
JCC's problems
were that bad. "There's been some
financial problems, but its generally a
good agency," Greenberg said.
He said bad publicity hasn't created
any resistance to giving because "what-
ever flaws there have been are minor
in comparison to what's been done."
Another campaign official, Michael
Berke, the former director of Detroit's
Allied Jewish Campaign, noted that
"the Center went through an agoniz-
ing re-evaluation that was sensitive to
address concerns." ❑

Residential Care on fund-raising
campaigns. He sees the goal for the
Center as an ambitious one
"There has to be a level of creativ-
ity that makes it doable, like drawing
younger donors to try and win their
allegiance," he said. "The message
that needs to be given is that every-
one can be comfortable so they can
get involved.
"It comes back to the ideology
that there needs to be a reason to
give and if that's not there, it has to
be a compelling case."
