/-) At JARC, Cohen teaches classes,
consults on programs and performs
some chaplaincy work. Among the pro-
grams she has helped plan are a month-
ly Rosh Chodesh group and a dance
midrash program that combines Torah
study with modern dance improvisa-
tional techniques.
Currently, Cohen is in the midst of
writing a grant proposal to expand
Judaic training for JARC caregivers,
most of whom are not Jewish, and initi-
ate collaborative programs with area
synagogues.
"She seems to have an instant rap-
port with many different types of peo-
ple," said Lynn Medow, JARC's admin-
istrative consultant. "She's especially
gifted at speaking with our clients and
relating to them.
At Congregation T'Chiyah, Cohen
teaches family and adult classes, con-
sults with members planning life-cycle
events and serves as a resource, provid-
ing ideas and materials for congregants
who are leading services.
"They've been functioning without a
rabbi for more than 20 years so they
don't need me to lead services," said
Cohen, adding, "They're very empow-
/—
ered Jews at T'Chiyah. They feel very
comfortable writing their own divrei
Torah [commentary] and they're always
excited about learning more. There are
a lot of rabbis all over this country who
would be thrilled to have Jews who are
so engaged with Judaism in their con-
gregation."
Although Cohen's job is only official-
ly five hours per week, T'Chiyah
President Harold Gurewitz said it seems
like she spends more time than that,
noting that she's taken on various
responsibilities not outlined in her orig-
inal job description. "We're a lay-led
congregation, but it's good to have a
professional assist us," he said. "Her
advice helps us focus on things in a pro-
ductive way."
Prior to her current positions,
Cohen, who lives in Ann Arbor,
worked at the Agency for Jewish
Education of Metropolitan Detroit
and the Hebrew Day School of Ann
Arbor. She served for several years as
associate director at the Tufts
University Hillel in Boston, but
returned to Michigan two years ago
to be close to family.
When not exploring Jewish issues,
Cohen indulges her other passion: the
creative arts. A studio art/art history
major in college, Cohen loves going to
art museums and recently started study-
ing modern dance, attending several
classes per week.
