the mother, shuttling her from the
son's hospital bed to the husband's bed
in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
All were eventually discharged and
they called later to thank her.
"I get the thank you's right awaT. I
feel very appreciated, and that's the
best part," she said.
Sometimes, the patients think of
her as a mother or a daughter.
To the staff, she's part Jewish moth-
er, part Dear Abby and always a wel-
come sight.
"As happy as the patients are to see
me, the staff is usually happier," she
said.
In the Endoscopy suite, where the
terms "blunt, flexible instruments,"
leave anyone queasy, Kendra
Kretzschmer, research nurse clinician
said Berger not only explains the pro-
cedure but comforts the patient as
well.
-"If only we could clone her," she
said.
When Berger emigrated from
Russia 24 years ago with a husband
and a baby, there were no programs or
vocational services available, "It was
very different back then," she said.
Waves of Russian Jews began arriv-
ing and the community wasn't ready.
Beginning in 1976, as part of the
Jewish Resettlement Service, Sinai
began providing Russian immigrants
with their first health screening, said
Elsa Silverman, manager of guild and
volunteer services.
This was one of the first stops on
the wa- to a new life in America,

Berger said.
At present, fewer health screenings
are given to Russian speaking,
patients, but the number of in-
patients is on the rise, said Silverman.
She cites undiagnosed medical illness-
es from Russia as the culprit.
"Lots of patients come in much
sicker than they should have because
of the Soviet system of medicine,"
added Berger, as she walked towards a
room where Guennadi Charov was
waiting.
Admitted days before with chest
discomfort, Charov, 80, got the good
news from Berger — in Russian —
that he's going home.
A thank-you note to the most pop-
ular person in Sinai Hospital sits on
top of her neatly arranged desk.
"They call and write to thank me,
and once in a while, I'll get flowers,
she said. "It's just an everyday job with
a lot or gratitude."
Said Kretzschmer, "Sinai wouldn't
be Sinai without her."
