GREAT SELECTION OF THE FINEST OUTDOOR &
INDOOR CASUAL FURNITURE & ACCESSORIES

SUMMER

MIL

\ forming her mother's. "You don't real-
ly want to experiment on your mom,
she explained.
But it wasn't easy. Kolton felt
"excited and stressed - excited
because I would be able to give back
to my mom some of all the gifts she's
given me, but stress because there's a
tremendous responsibility."
One of the toughest problems was
how to refer to her mother during the
ceremony, which took place at a
cousin's house in Huntington Woods.
"When I was talking to her, it felt
awkward to say, 'You know, Anita.'
But I couldn't exactly say, 'Mom, do
you take Bernie?' When I talked to
her, I referred to her as 'Mom,' when I
talked about her, I referred to her as
Anita.'"
While Adam performed the cere-
mony at the Birmingham Temple, his
sister, Eve, and Rose's daughter
Deborah, were bridesmaids. Chalom
and Rose had known each other for
16 years, through their daughters -
Eve once babysat for Deborah.
Adam began officiating at wedding
ceremonies this summer. With his
mother's wedding, he didn't have to
interview the bride and groom as
extensively as usual - he already
knew where they came from and how
they met.
"There's always that ambivalence
that all kids go through when their
parents get divorced," Adam said.
"There is some conflict - I don't
think there's any Oedipal tension, but
there's still that little bit of, well, I still
think my dad would work. Once in a
while I'll say, can't you wait? Another
year, or 20?"
"But then I get rational again and
accept it, and frankly I'm really

pleased to be able to do it, because
Chuck is a nice guy and he makes her
really happy."
Plus, Adam admits there's a bit of
"control freak" in him. "I want the
ceremony to be very good, and the
way to do that, is to do it," he says. "I
get to be there in an important way at
this important event, and I get to have
it done the way I want it done."

"I couldn't
exactly say,
`Mom, do you
take Bernie?'"

- Tamara Kolton

Chalom admits it was almost surre-
al to see her son standing in an official
position under the chuppah.
"The first time I heard him deliver
a sermon, I thought, 'This is a kid I
would help write papers in high
school, read it over for grammatical
mistakes - how am I supposed to
look at this kid as my rabbi when he's
my child?' I don't care how old kids
get, that is very difficult to get over, to
see the child as a man when as a child
he had a stranglehold on your heart."
"This is another step in accepting -
the adulthood in him. I'll say, 'Why
don't we do this in the service?' And
he says, 'No.' His word carries weight,
whereas before, I was the mother, [say-
ing] 'What do you mean no?'" ❑
