Edith Covensky
in the same bilingual manner as her
previous six publications.
Poetics (Eked; $16) displays
Covensky's Hebrew poems on the left-
hand pages, and their English transla-
tions on the right, for reading in
either, or both, languages. The cover
of the book, however (graced with a
photo of the author's daughter,
Laurice), clearly shows that this is a
book of Hebrew poems that have been
translated into English.
Translations have been made by
Ed Codish, a published American poet
who spent 16 years teaching English
and American literature in Israel and
recently left his teaching duties at
Akiva for a post in Boston.
Codish describes his work as a
process: he translates Covensky's
Hebrew poems into English, and then
reads them to her "aloud, word for
word, until they are both satisfied"
with what Covensky calls each poem's
"literary accuracy."
Israeli-born Covensky, currently a
Bloomfield Hills resident, calls every
word a tune, saying that "a poem is
like a musical composition," adding
that the Hebrew word "shir" means
both poem and song. Her poetry is
filled with musical terms, with their
themes including topics like love and
nature and feelings.
Covensky is already at work on her
next book of bilingual poetry, After
Auschwitz.
