the ground floor ... Yannis came here
from Greece and was formerly a waiter
at Lelli's on Woodward.
THERE WAS something different
about the Aristocrat restaurant in Pine
Lake Mall (now Crosswinds) on
Orchard Lake Road ... And it wasn't
long before folks found out ... They
knew it served Philippine cuisine, but
also discovered dishes from China,
Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and
Indonesia.
THE BENCHMARK was tucked
away in the back at Southfield's Michi-
gan Inn ... without its own private
entrance ... but was certainly one of the
better restaurants in Detroit's metropol-
itan area when it came to fine dining.
CHEF THEODORE'S on
Orchard Lake Road, between 12 and
13 Mile Roads, was owned by some-
one with a rare skill ... a singing chef
... Theodore Mitropoulos used to
come out of the kitchen singing "Ole
Sole Mio" as delighted customers lis-
tened in awe while he held the last
note for so long.

have come

their chins as to where their next fine
dining experience should be, Machus
Red Fox on Telegraph and Maple was
many times forgotten because of being
taken so muchfor granted But
those who visited usually walked out
with a memorable, award-winning
dining experience so long as Executive
Chef Leopold Schaeli was there
(Michigan's other master chef then
was Milos Cihelka.)
BRASSERIE DUGLASS, former
Restaurant Duglass on Southfield and-.
12 1/2 Mile, was described by
owner/chef Duglass (Doug Grech) as
"the style of Toulouse Lautrec that lends
itself to easy conversation, a chance to
meet a new friend or lure a lover."
SUNDAY EVENINGS at Don
Vargo's 1940 Chophouse on East Jeffer-
son were like a musician's night ... with
instrumentalists invited to sit in with
the fine Billy Rose musical group. ❑
