cast and crew; his father, Abraham,
played one of the thugs who torments
Max Cohen.
When he attended Harvard Univer-
sity, Darren Aronofsky majored in
social anthropology, but his interest
shifted when he began taking film
classes. He went on to get a master of
me arts in directing from the Ameri-
can Film Institute.
Sean Gullette, a friend from Har-
vard, and Eric Watson, who studied

motion picture production at the AFI
and began working with Aronofsky
there, joined Aronofsky in New York
to get 7r off the ground.
7r evolved piece by piece. Through
workshopping the idea with Gullette
and regular input from Watson, the
paranoid mathematical genius of Max
Cohen emerged.
Plagued with seizure and black-
out-inducing migraines, Max has
taken mathematics way beyond dig-
its on a page into a unified theory
that could explain the inner logic of

Piece of It'

If your curiosity is piqued about the
movie 1V, but you find you are still a
few pieces short of the whole pic-
ture, you may want to visit
www.pithemovie.com .
The movie's official Web site, "n.
the Movie" is the first film site on
the Internet to be designed by a
film's star. Sean Gullette, who plays
the lead role of mathematician Max
Cohen, crafted the site in collabora-
tion with Jessica Rovello of Artisan
Entertainment Inc.
Gullette was careful to design the
site to mirror the movie's style,
theme and mood. The splash page
references Max's computer crashing,
with a portion of the Hebrew alpha-
bet and the numerical value of 7r
scrolling across the screen.
The animation continues on the
homepage, chaotic blinking words
linking to the many internal pages,
which range from writer/director
Darren Aronofsky's diary to the New
York Stock Exchange to migraines.
Also available are video clips of
the movie, information on the
movie's soundtrack, a page that
boasts of the film's awards and
another page listing the locations
where n is playing. You can even
enter the site's survey contest to win
various prizes.
"ir the Movie" is an excellent
primer for seeing the film. Many of
the pages are dedicated to providing
the visitor with the fundamental
concepts that are discussed in the
movie.
The complexity, the mystery and
the beauty of Kabbalah; the game of
Go; chaos theory; spirals and g
itself are described on their respec-
tive pages. And if you are still hun-
gry, " 7r' the Movie" provides external

Here you will find a paper titled
"Divine Authorship: Computer
Reveals Startling Word Patterns,"
written by Jeffrey B. Satinover. In
1988, an obscure paper called
"Equidistant Letter Sequences of the
Book of Genesis" was published in
the prominent Journal of the Royal

Statistical Society.
As yet unrefuted, according to
Satinover, the paper's findings reveal
words encoded in the Hebrew text
of -Genesis. By examining the text as
a string of letters without spaces,
every other letter or every three let-
ters are added together to form word
combinations.
Skeptics are inclined to discount
this as mere chance. However, when
this word-finding was subjected to
the rigors of the scientific method,
complete with a control which ran-
domly selected letter combinations,
the published results found that the
odds of these words occurring mere-
ly by chance were less than one in a
quadrillion (a million billion).
Satinover's paper discusses the
implications and how the scientific
community has received this study.
Well worth a visit to find out.
