4 Seasons Pimp ace & Barbecue

we told him the day of the week, he
would reply, in a plaintive voice,
"Please let Mikey go back to Eng-
land." I felt like I was torturing my
boy, but I know that new experiences
are good for autistic children. It helps
break their fondness for that day-in,
I day-out sameness that the rest of us
abhor.
Mikey finally found a friend in our
friends' cat. But he misjudged how to
1-- play with the animal and ended up
with a large scratch across his fore-

I head.
I just couldn't leave him alone for a
minute — there was no telling what
trouble he would get into. I knew he
was feeling shaky as soon as he got
to France because he immediately
started looking for every drain in the
I house. Mikey looking for drains
means he isn't feeling secure in his
surroundings and needs the comfort o
1 his obsessions, like finding drains or
spinning in endless circles. A few
days later, we were on our way back
to England. The minute our car rolled
1 off the ferry and back onto British soil,
Mikey was his old self again. The
worried look that had been his sole
expression for the past few days was
I erased. He was sunny and chatty
again.
"Do you want to go back to France
1 next summer?" we teased him.
"No," he said. "No France."
We all could relax again, though I
felt a bit guilty for subjecting him to a
trip that he found so stressful.
But last night he wanted to pretend
that he was driving his play car to
France. "I'm going to France," he
said. I pretended to be in charge of
the hotel where he would stay after
his car got there. As I tucked him into
his bed at the "hotel," I asked him if
he liked France.
"Yes, I go to France again," he
said. "I like France." ❑
