Berlin (JTA) -- Germany has
honored a group of army officers
on the 54th anniversary of their
unsuccessful attempt to kill Hitler.
Rita Sussxnuth, the president of
the lower house of the German
Parliament, said at a Berlin mili-
tary ceremony July 20 — the
anniversary of the failed plot ---
that the assassination attempt was
a reminder of German opposition
to the Nazi regime.
Chancellor Helmut Kohl issued
a statement saying the anniversary
should remind Germans of the
need to protect their democracy
–\
from political extremists.
The prime minister of the state
of Brandenburg, Manfred Stolpe,
called for increased alertness against
racial and anti-Semitic bias.
The July 20, 1944, assassination
attempt was led by Count von
Stauffenberg, who wanted to oust
the Nazi regime and end World
War II. The conspirators placed a
bomb in a briefcase that was left
under a desk where Hider was hold-
ing a meeting. The bomb exploded,
but Hider emerged unhurt
Stauffenberg and the other offi-
cers involved in the plot were sen-
tenced to death and hanged at
Gestapo offices in Berlin.

New York (JTA) — A recent
archaeological discovery may
require a revision of the ancient his-
tory books — and of the Bible.
Recent archaeological digs have
provided evidence that Jerusalem
was a big and fortified city in
1,800 BCE, 800 years before King
David conquered the city from
the Jebu.sites. The new findings
contradict the theory that prior to
David's raid on Jebus, Jerusalem
was a poor and small village.
Gideon Avni, a Jerusalem
archaeologist, said the entire con-
cept on the City of David, the
core of Jerusalem's Old City,
would now have to be changed.
The digs at which the discovery
was made took place near the
Gichon spring, Jerusalem's main
water source.
