Joan Braun of Southfield, new cate-
gories this year will include an
expanded selection of books on
women's studies, an African-American ,
studies section, and books on Detroit.
Some people just buy a few myster-
i) ies, romance paperbacks, cookbooks
or kid's books; others push overflow-
ing carts. At last year's sale, a man who
recently moved into a new house was
buying up oodles of ancient-looking
hardcovers, heavy on the classics, just
to fill his empty looking built-in
bookcases.
• "We get lots of decorators in here
buying books just for show," said
book sale volunteer Roz Berman.
For true penny pinchers, on the last
two days of the sale, Aug. 11 and 12,
all books go at half price. And from 3-
6 p.m. Aug. 12, books are free to
teachers, charitable organizations and
recent immigrants from the former
Soviet Union.
"All they have to do is bring some
kind of identification, like a letterhead
from their job, and we'll give them
boxes to fill up. In the past, we've
given free books to jails, women's shel-
ters, nursing homes, Project HOPE,
all kinds of places," said Sachs.
Tax-deductible contributions of
used books may be donated year-
round to the Detroit Chapter of the
Brandeis University Women's
Committee. Drop them off at the
