"The only thing is that we're not
egalitarian: we don't give women aliyot
or count them in a minyan. Which is
the way Beth Abraham was until just
two years ago."
Nira Alphont, a former BAHM
teacher, said she is excited about being
a "pioneer" at the new school. "I like a
challenge, and I think it will work out
just great," she said.
Alphont, like the other teachers
who left BAHM, is Israeli, as is
Lanxner.
Former BAHM member Gail
Zemach recently joined B'nai David,
has enrolled her two children in its
religious school and is helping with
the formation of its school board and
parent-teacher organization. "We're
hoping to build a very fine religious
school, and hopefully, the children
will receive the same kind of educa-
tion, they were receiving under Can-
tor Lanxner at Beth Abraham," she
said.
BAHM Rabbi Aaron Bergman is
not worried by the prospect of B'nai
David luring his congregants away.
"We wish B'nai David well," he
said. "We have a [religious school]
staff in place that we're happy with
and have been meeting with parents.
We knew some people would probably
leave and follow [Lanxner], and that's
fine. We expect enrollment to be
around the same as last year, maybe
more, but it's hard to tell for sure until
they actually show up."
BAHM recently hired former
teacher and administrative assistant
Julie Margolis as its religious school
director and held an informational
meeting on Sunday that attracted 35
parents. The 573-member congrega-
tion has not yet hired a cantor, but
Bergman said BAHM member Ronn
Nadis will lead High Holiday ser-
vices.
Berenholz noted that BAHM Presi-
dent Henry Lonnerstater provided a
letter of recommendation for Lanxner.
Lonnerstater never stated why his
board had rescinded Lanxner's con-
tract, but an April 29 letter he sent to
BAHM congregants stated that "the
board feels strongly that our clergy
must set an example with regard to
abiding by standards of ethical and
moral behavior."
B'nai David's Berenholz said "to the
best of our knowledge, Cantor Lanxn-
er is a fine and upstanding clergy per-
son in the community, and to date we
have no concrete knowledge of any
impropriety or unethical behavior."i_i
