P
erhaps there is no greater symbol of Kavod Ha-Met (honoring the dead) than
the Shomer, the religious watchman who prays for the soul of the deceased. From
the first family we served 57 years ago, to the present, our chapel is staffed with a
Shomer 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our legacy is serving Detroit's Jewish
community with dignity and
adherence to tradition.

IN LOVING MEMORY
Shirley Gold, 70, of West. Bloomfield, died June 22,
after a brief illness. Born in- Detroit in 1928, the
daughter of Katy and Samuel Rubin, Shirley spent
her childhood and adult years in Detroit and its sub-
urbs.
She made a name for herself in the retail
Yy
clothing industry, establishing three successful ladies'
apparel shops; Sample Rack in Berkley, Special Lady
in Southfield and Marni in West Bloomfield.
The beloved mother of Les (Lili) Gold and
Marni Sklar, Shirley was also the loving grandmother of Ashley and Seth Gold,
Lindsay, Heather and Jared Sklar.
Shirley's parents were among the founders of the Radomer Aid Society, of
which she was an active member.
Her grandchildren spoke of her in glowing terms. Said Ashley, her first grand-
child, "My Grandma Shirley loved playing cards, and she will always be my
Queen of Hearts." Granddaughters Lindsay and Heather added, "Through every-
thing we realize that family is most important. Our Grandma Shirley taught us
that as well as many other things about life. She will always hold a special place
in our hearts." Her youngest grandson Jared remembers fun sleepovers, shopping -
trips to Amazing Savings and vacations in Florida, while his mother Marni, for
whom Shirley's most recent apparel shop was named, felt that "...my mother will
always be remembered by me because she was my best friend."
Shirley is also survived by her sister Dorothy Pianka, of Florida and many lov-
ing nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Hebrew Memorial
