T

he conditions were consid-
erably less arduous and
their loads lighter, but
travellers on the 1998
Teen Mission recently biked along
the Burma Road once used by
Israelis to transport food and supplies
from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Built at the time of Israel's War of
Independence in 1948, when
Jerusalem was surrounded by Arab-
controlled territory, the Burma Road
was the only safe access route for
bringing essentials to the Jewish civil-
ians and soldiers in the city.
For the teens who took to their
bicycles, the experience was a real
exercise in history.

Clockwise from top:

Jeff Sonne (front) and
Jason Menuck triumph.

Heather Pianko (f-ont) and
Liz Elkiss easily make the climb.

(left to right)
Jackie Tate, Jennifer Trepeck,
Samantha Kaplan, Becky Hyke,
John Redmond, Julie Meyer,

Erin Kaplan and
Andrew_ Schwartz take a break.
