There are currently 200 research
projects, both privately and publicly
funded, that continue to study the
effects of EMFs on humans.
Edison's Whitney acknowledges
that some concern about the topic is
healthy. "Is there a justifiable con-
cern? I think it is wise to be con-
cerned about everything in our envi-
ronment as long as there is a healthy
perspective."
He draws a parallel: he allows his
three children to eat peanut butter
and jelly sandwiches despite the fact
that there is a toxin . in peanut butter
that has been shown to cause cancer.
"I know there is a toxin," he said,
"but the risk is so small. That my
kids would be the one in tens of
thousands of children to develop the
childhood cancer — it was not a
determining factor. The benefits of
having a peanut butter and jelly
sandwich outweigh the risk.
"With EMFs, there is no defin-
able risk," Whitney said.
While the controversy continues,
Diane Swimmer continues her
protest. A full-time nursing student,
Swimmer has studied the research
reports. She is so convinced that
EMFs do more harm than good that
she avoids frequent use of appliances
that have been shown to have a
higher EMF output.
"I don't let my kids stand in front
of the microwave oven when it is in
use," she said. "I only use a hair
dryer when it is necessary and then
it is so far from my head that it
barely makes a difference. I threw
out my cell phone last year."
Swimmer draws a distinction
between using these items sparingly
and cautiously and being a neighbor
to an Edisonubstation.
"These are choices I made," she
said, referring to the appliances. "I
am not choosing to have a substa-
tion in my back yard." Swimmer
said she would move if the substa-
tion is located within sight of her
home. "I have already met with a
realtor," she said. 0

I love Strub's pickles. I eat them every day.
I love Strub's pickles, in each and every way.
When I eat them, I smile
And you can see them from a mile.
Their tasty taste is nice and strong.
And they will never lead you wrong.
I love Strub's pickles, I really do.
I love Strub's pickles, and so should you!
