In an accompanying New England
Journal of Medicine editorial, Dr. .
Edward W. Campion wrote, "This
whole saga began when two Denver
researchers, puzzled by a small cluster
of cancer in children, came to believe
that living in close proximity to high-
voltage power lines was a cause of
leukemia. The analysis they published
in 1979 was crude and relied on dis-
tances from homes to power lines and
on wiring configurations rather than
on direct measures of exposure to
electromagnetic fields.

Inconclusive and
inconsistent
studies generate
fear.

"When people hear that a scien-
tific study has implicated something
new as a cause of cancer, they get
worried. They get even more wor-
ried when the exposure is called
radiation and comes from danger-
ous-looking high-voltage power lines
controlled by government and
industry, which some distrust
deeply." He cited reactions of mem-
bers of the public, some of whom
conducted their own epidemiologi-
cal studies or pushed for government
funding for studies.
"The many inconclusive and
inconsistent studies have generated
worry and fear and have given peace
of mind to no one," he concluded.
"The 18 years of research have pro-
duced considerable paranoia, but lit-
tle insight and no prevention. It is
time to stop wasting our research
resources."
The American Cancer Society has
stood by the Linet research and has
a position paper on the topic of
EMFs that states, "EMFs have not
been shown to cause cancer. In fact,
no non-ionizing radiation has been
shown to cause cancer or to promote
its growth once it has started.
"In contrast, ionizing radiation can
cause cancer to start by changing its
atomic structure and thereby causing
genetic mutations within cells."
Even with the latest study's appear-
ance and strong backing by numerous
scientists, some are not swayed. EMF
protest groups decried the study, say-
ing it was alchemy at its best.
