Researchers found that those liv-
ing with high levels of exposure to
magnetic fields at home had double
the risk of developing adult
leukemia than those not exposed.
The findings set off a chain reac-
tion throughout the United States.
Parents and concerned community
members protested the building of
and existence of substations near
population centers, saying they
caused cancer. Within the past year,
communities from Los Gatos,
Calif, to Long Island have seen sim-
ilar protests.
In response, the power companies
have said the placement of such
facilities is inevitable in order to be
effective.
"The location of the substation
has to be near the load center, ,,
Detroit Edison's Bruce Whitney
said, addinc, that the location is
determined by the miles of wire and
number of customers per circuit.
He said many stations are located
in residential areas and have been
for the 95 years that Edison has
been operating them. "Most people
have them somewhere near their
neighborhood and don't even know
they exist."
A report issued last year by the
National Cancer Institute and the
Children's Cancer Group gave
ammunition to the power compa-
nies.
In the report that was led by
NCI's Dr. Martha Linet, researchers
measured EMF levels in four rooms
in current and former homes of 629
children with ALL and a control
group of 619 other children. The
researchers also paid close attention
to the location, type and distance
from external power lines, as well as
the strength of the earth's magnetic
field in the homes not only where
the children lived but also in homes
where their mothers lived during the
gestation period.
The researchers concluded that
there was no link between EMF
exposure and the risk of ALL,
regardless of the measure of expo-
sure used.
"The results of our study differ
from three earlier U.S. studies in
that we found no evidence of a sig-
nificantly increased risk of ALL
among children whose main resi-
dence or residence during pregnancy
was classified in the highest wire
code category," said Linet, who
works at NCI's Radiation Epidemi-
ology Branch.
