1939 — Deroiters marched down Woodward
Avenue when Great Britain issued a white
paper restricting immigration to pre-state
Palestine.

1949 — The Cantors' Chorus paid tribute to the
State of Israel on its first birthday. The celebra-
tion took place at the State Fair Grounds.

1951 — She was Golda Myerson on her
earliest visits here as representative of the Jewish
State. Later, as Golda Meir, she served as prime
minister.

1958-59 — Detroiters made frequent trips to
Israel on United Jewish Appeal study missions
— the first of many exchanges of solidarity
and friendship.

1967 — Detroit rallied for Israel on the eve of the
Six-Day War. The Jewish Community Council
organized the demonstration at the Meyers-Curtis
Jewish Center.

1977 — Yitzhak Rabin addressed the annual
Allied Jewish Campaign pacesetters "Fisher
Meeting" launching the communitywide effort.

1980-81 — With an occasional exception,
Israel's children were happy to get their photo
taken when Detroiters arrived on study missions.
