OW,
would have it, but it serves as
Jerusalem's southern defense. In its
strategic position, Har Homa is no
different from the post-1967
Jerusalem neighborhoods of Ramot in
the north, Talpiot in the east or Gilo
in the southwest. Together, they form
a concrete ring of Jewish neighbor-
hoods that provides a large portion of
Jerusalem's residential area.
Israeli plans to build on Har Homa
predate the Oslo Accords and were
developed during the Rabin adminis-
tration. The plans had survived
numerous court challenges, including
one as recent as June 16. Current pro-
jections for Har Homa include some
6,500 residential units, vitally needed
today to alleviate Jerusalem's severe
housing shortages and to keep
Jerusalemites from moving out to
nearby towns.
Palestinian attempts to block Jewish
housing on Har Homa have even
enlisted environmental concerns. The
aforementioned Palestinian documents
decry the loss of an "ecological
reserve" and the "Abu Ghneim ecosys-
tem" if Har Homa proceeds.
- Palestinian concern for ecosystems?
Give us a break! The burning of
"Zionist forests" was an exalted goal
during the Palestinian intifada. The
over-pumping of wells in Palestinian-
controlled Gaza in the last two years
destroyed underwater aquifers, shows
the lack-of Palestinian concern for the
environment and serves as a warning
against surrendering the Yarkon-
Taninim aquifers. These aquifers
extend under the West Bank and - pro-
vide water for Israel's large population
on the coast.
The Palestinian Authority warns
that a\Jewish Har Homa would
endanger Christian holy sites nearby.
The charge drips of hypocrisy, consid-
ering the PA's poor track record deal-
ing with Arab Christians and their
holy sites in the Palestinian-controlled
areas.
The Palestinians may have done
Israel a favor in releasing their docu-
ments, which call Jerusalem a "Pales-
tinian city" and state that Har Homa
(Jabal Abu-Ghneim) will deprive
Bethlehem of the only land left for its
future development ... (and) will cre-
ate a physical barrier disconnecting
Bethlehem from Jerusalem."
Precisely. The Palestinians have thus
provided the most compelling reasons
for Israel's construction of Har Homa
— a new Jewish neighborhood, on
Jewish land in an undivided Israeli-
controlled Jerusalem. ❑
