eeking to turn out the vote
in the Aug. 4 primary elec-
tion, several Jewish organiza-
tions are sponsoring an open
forum for gubernatorial and state
Senate and House candidates next
Tuesday.
Except for Gov. John Engler, who
will send his southeast Michigan cam-
paign director in his place, "we're fair-
ly certain we're getting all the invited
candidates," said Allan Gale, Jewish
Community Council of Metropolitan
Detroit spokesman and moderator. In
the governor's race, Engler faces Gary
Artinian on the Republican side,
while Geoffrey Feiger, Larry Owen,
and Doug Ross face off on the
Democratic ticket.
The planned two-hour forum, set
for 7 p.m. July 28 at Temple Shir
Shalom in West Bloomfield, will focus
on the gubernatorial race the first hour.
Candidates from both parties will give
a prepared two-minute speech, fol-
lowed by a response to prepared ques-
tions concerning the Jewish communi-
ty, said Gale. The prepared questions
deal with separation of church and
state, and safety nets in government
funding for recent immigrants, the
elderly and the disabled. Public ques-
tions will then be addressed.
The second segment follows the
same format, centering on Republican
primaries in both the 15th District
(Farmington Hills and West
Bloomfield) Senate race, which pits
incumbent Bill Bullard Jr. against
challenger Barbara Dobb, and the
39th District (West Bloomfield)
House race, with Henry G. Leeds,
Debbie Schlussel, Margaret Scott,
Marc Shulman and Ron Wolf battling
for a vacant seat.
The forum is sponsored by The
Detroit Jewish News, the Jewish
Community Council of Metropolitan
Detroit, Hadassah, Temple Shir
Shalom, National Council of Jewish
Women, and the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit-
Institute of Retired Professionals.
