and to compete against other Jewish

After losing a heartbreaking over-
time final to Los Angeles last year,
the team has prepared for their next
face-off with Los Angeles by playing
in spring leagues at U.S. Blades and
Joe Dumars Field House. The team
has 10 returning players and four
rookies.
Los Angeles is not the only bump
in the road for Detroit on their path
to gold: 11 new teams lie in the way
in this year's tournament.
Similar to last year's hockey team,
the Detroit bowling team will com-
pete in its first Maccabi tournament
next month. Rookie Maccabi coaches
Neil Lefton and Rick Kirsch will lead
the five boys and four girls that make
up the team. According to Kirsch, the
team is looking forward to having
fun, making new friends, and bowl-
ing the best they can.
Another team with Maccabi new-
corners is the girls' gymnastics team,
coached by four-time Maccabi coach
Andy Tucker. Although captain Erin
Kaufman is the only gymnast on the
team who has competed in the
Games before, the young squad has a
perfect blend of experience and up-
and-coming talent.
Every gymnast is ranked and com-
petes on a level of 5 through 10. Above
10 is Olympic caliber. The Detroit
team has three girls at level 5, two at
level 8. Kaufman, who led the team to
an overall bronze last year, will corn-
pete at level 10 this year.
According to Tucker, the team will
be strongest on the bars and in the
floor event, and they will struggle
with the vault.
"Gymnastics is much more of an
individual sport and every girl has to
perform well individually," Tucker
said. "What I found is that if they
perform well individually and are
happy with their performance they
will have a good time." ET
