These are improvements that benefit drivers of all ages. States are enacting shorter driver license renewal periods and some even require age-based road testing. Alternative or public transportation offers an option for those who would otherwise not drive, but many have no other choice. But all this doesn't absolve older drivers from taking action on their own to improve their driving. In addition, older drivers must anticipate a time in their lives when they will need to change, limit or give up driving. Dr. Klyman offers these suggestions: * Begin a gradual process of relin- quishing the car. * Stop driving at night and on crowded freeways. * Take routes that are extremely familiar so you're not groping for street names. According to author Dr. Kahn, friendship patterns matter. Most older people tend to have same- aged friends, which has its disadvan- tages. If you have connections with people of many ages, then without seriously imposing on them, it's pos- sible to ride with these individuals instead of drive. The American Association of Retired People's 55/ALIVE program asserts that if there is a question about driving, older people should enroll in a driver assessment pro- gram. These programs are geared more toward helping and less toward regulating older people out of their cars. A senior assessment involves examining previous driving records, one's medications and cognitive abil- ity, judgment, mobility, reaction time, coordination and nutritional history. But sometimes the family must intervene. "If there are problems," said Dr. Klyman, "it is really your responsibility to find a way to com- municate with your relative that is in the best interests of everyone to let someone else handle the driving. It's important to be involved, sup- portive, and to help identify their options."
