need some help, often have deficits
that are fixable, said Ms. Cessante,
"and sometimes as
easily as going
through a driver
retraining program.
"For example,
someone suffers a
stroke and has some
function loss in their
hands. We can teach
them to drive using a
spinner knob on the
steering wheel. Cer-
tain coordination
problems can be reme-
diated by physical
therapy.
"People don't even know all the
alternatives out there to totally sur-
rendering one's license. Driving is a
very complex task and our goal at
the center is to keep older drivers as
independent as long as possible. But
safety is the bottom line.
"My advice to older drivers is to

stay alert and involved. It's the skills
we use daily that carry over into dri-
ving."
The U.S. Department of Trans-
portation notes in a new study that
barriers to driver safety include cul-
tural and social norms that favor
individual independence over public
safety.
"Giving up the car,"
said Bloomfield Hills
psychiatrist Dr. Cas-
sandra Klyman, "is full
of symbolic and prag-
matic disadvantages. It
means giving up all
that driving symbolizes
— maturity, mobility,
liberation. And it really
hurts.
"Also, families are
ambivalent, wanting to
protect their relative
from this terrible loss.
They recognize that the end of dri-
ving means that family members are
faced with additional driving
responsibilities."
The U.S. Department of Trans-
portation is close to releasing a
handbook for traffic management
officials to redesign roadways. It will
call for larger lettering on signs,
