Between Middlebelt & 14 Mile At The Movies "Polish Wedding," filmed in Hamtramck, celebrates the drama of a world that was. ALAN ABRAMS Special to the Jewish News P reparing to make love to her boss Roman (Rade Serbedzi- ja) on the floor of the corpo- rate men's bathroom, Polish cleaning woman Jadzia (Lena Olin) tells him, "You're a Gypsy." As she rolls over on top of him, he replies, "I'm not a Gypsy, you know, I'm a Jew." This on-camera lovemaking in Pol- ish Wedding, a story of passions, jeal- ousies and entanglements facing a working-class, Polish-American clan from Hamtramck, implies sexual and class domination in a scene that cre- ates more than just a hint of exploita- tion by a wealthy Jewish businessman. Rade Serbedzija, the talented actor from the former Yugoslavia who plays Roman Kroll, the Jewish lover of the married Jadzia, looks much the same here as he did in his role in Val Kilmer's The Saint — more a villain than a successful Hamtramck busi- nessman. Avital, a top box-office draw in Israel and one of the nation's most popular and beloved stars, won her Israeli Academy Award in 1991 for Best Supporting Actress in Over the Ocean, and was recently nominated for Best Actress in Groupie. She moved to the United States in 1993 and has since appeared in Star Gate with Kurt Russell and Dead Man opposite Johnny Depp. More recently, she starred with her real-life boyfriend, David Schwimmer, in Kissing a Fool. After Avital's character, Sofie, is asked by Jadzia, "What does a Gypsy know?" — calling people Gypsies appears to be Jadzia's favorite pejora- tive — Sofie reminds Jadzia that she's 737-7220 Fax: 737-7223 Visit us on the web www.hakotasushi.com Wm= 1111111 1 NOW APPEARING AT THE PIANO BAR: WILBERT PEAGL.ER Wed. 6 Thurs., 7:00-1 1:00 • Fri. & fat., 7:30 - Midnight OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK • 248-626-2630 4108 WEST MAPLE • BLOOMFIELD HILLS 7/17 1998 88 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111 Gabriel Byrne and Lena Olin star as a married couple facing the wife's infidelities in "Polish Wedding." .4
