This month I profile one such family, as siblings I Michael and Jennifer Colton are both involved in a variety of athlet- I is activities. "It is a fast-paced game with a lot of action," 12-year-old Michael said about his favorite sport, hock- ey. Michael has been on a team ever since he was a little kid. "Hockey gets me in shape," he said. "It's also a team sport that helps you learn teamwork by help- ; ing out other people." Among his most memorable games he recalled: "A few years ago we were losing in a Thanks- : giving tournament final, and our 1 coach gave us a pep talk in the I middle of the second period. We went on and tied the game and sent the game into overtime. We I won that game and the tourna- ment. It was great." Of his other love, baseball, I Michael said, "It takes my mind off I other things and it's a lot of fun. It's a mind game, something you have I to concentrate on. You must have I determination." Jennifer, 9, keeps herself busy, too. "Figure skating is a fun thing I to do, and it takes a while to mas- ter so it gives you a great sense of accomplishment," she said. "I start- : ed at the Detroit Skating Club when I was 4 and skated there for a few years. Later, I moved to the new Farmington Ice Arena, and I now skate on a team and individu- `—\ ally. "My favorite moment was when I won first place individually in West- land during a competition last win- ter," she said. Along with skating, Jennifer enjoys gymnastics and kick boxing. "My brother started kick boxing and I got involved, too. I currently have a red band and I am going after my blue band," Jennifer said. Michael has his green band and is heading toward a brown band. These two are staying busy dur- ing the summer. Both are in camp at the Jewish Community Center. c—\ Each week, Jennifer and Michael are involved in different activities including dance, tennis, and gym- nastics for Jennifer. "Of all the weeks of camp, my most enjoyable has to be either street hockey or golf," said Michael, who has been rock climb- E'\ ing in the camp and is looking for- ward to participating in many activ- ities during the next few weeks. For many, summer is a time to relax. However, for Michael and Jennifer Colton, the summer means extra time to practice sports they don't have time for during the school year. They also are able to try new sports at which they might become superstars. So follow their lead and get involved in a new sport this summer. ❑
