Lerman rejected those charges,
7– 'calling Rabbi Weiss an "extremist."
He insisted that the agreement will
actually protect the Jewish character
of the site. He said he was negotiat-
ing for removal of the cross — but
that the recent public controversy
over the issue "lit a firestorm in
Poland. It means that we are going to
need more time to negotiate. Things
")are in suspension right now."
Some 150 members of the Polish
parliament, he said, have protested
efforts to remove the cross.
But Lerman's forces suffered a set-
back when the World Jewish
Congress decided not -to support the
agreement until the cross is removed;
since the coalition operates by con-
sensus, that effectively delayed the
; signing.
WJC executive director Elan
Steinberg said that the change came
after the group decided to consult
with Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel.
"Professor Wiesel says we should
not negotiate under the shadow of
the cross," he said. "His position is
the decisive factor for us."

Polish Premier At Museum
With the agreement between Jewish
groups and the government in
Warsaw on "hold," the new Polish
prime minister, Jerzy Buzek, paid a
visit to the Holocaust Museum.
Buzek briefly toured* the perma-
nent exhibition and held a private
meeting with museum officials. He
also presented the museum with two
spoons found at the site of the Belzec
concentration camp.
The spoons were uncovered during
archaeological work that is preceding
the construction of a new memorial
at the site, the result of a 1997 agree-
ment between museum officials and
the Polish government.
About 600,000 Jews died at
Belzec, the first death camp to use
permanent gas chambers. But the site
had fallen into disrepair; the Polish
government has promised to take
steps to preserve it.
Rabbi Weiss called off a scheduled
protest at the museum during the
prime minister's visit because of what
he called "unsightly barriers" erected
to keep his protest out of view of the
visiting dignitary.
Museum officials deny any plan to
thwart Rabbi Weiss' protests; the bar-
riers were erected a month ago to
shield a major construction project
along the 15th Street side of the
museum.
