three candidates vying for a
seat on the Oakland County
Board of Commissioners in upcoming
elections.
Another concern: paying for the
enhanced 911 emergency system and
managing county mental health ser-
vices.
Republican Hartley Harris, 44, will
try to unseat 13th District incumbent
Thomas A. Law, 55, who is serving his
eighth term on the board. A primary is
set for Aug. 4.
Joan C. Richards, 51, running as a
Democrat, will face the primary winner
in November.
The 13th District includes Franklin,
Bingham Farms, Beverly Hills, and
parts of West Bloomfield and
Bloomfield townships. The commission
post pays an annual salary of $25,111
for the two-year term.
Harris, who attends Shaarey Zedek
B'nai Israel Center and Ohel Moed of
Shomrey E_munah, has never held pub-
lic office. A local business owner, mar-
ried for 21 years and a father of two, he
said the largest problem facing the
county are the roads, and how to free
the money to fix them for the long
term.
"We don't need more taxes, we need
more efficient use of the tax dollars we
pay," he said. Spending exorbitant
amounts of money for "patchwork fix-
ing has to stop," he said.
Harris said an enhanced 911 system
benefits everyone, and the money
should come from the general fund
